- WHOA!! Hold on thar, pardner!
-
- Yes, there are both "new" and "old" V34 Sportsters out there. The "new"
- Sportster can readily be identified by checking the ati7 screen and
- looking at your Clock speed."OLD" V34 Sportsters use a 20.16 Mhz clock.
- "NEW" V34 Sportsters use a 92.0 Mhz clock. They aren't interchangeable.
-
- However, both old and new model Sportsters do support the i11 command.
- The ati 11 command is just broken in the "new" V34 Sportster which has
- either the 10-13-95 or 10-28-95 Eprom date. I'm unsure whether the i11
- command was fixed in the 01-11-96 firmware. However, I do know that it
- definitely works in the 03-04-96 firmware.
-
- HALT! Before you all go lining up to get new Sportster firmware, you
- must first figure out whether you have an "OLD" V34 Sportster or a "NEW"
- V34 Sportster, because firmware for the "NEW" model will not work in the
- "OLD" model (and vise-versa). The firmware microcode is version
- specific. See the first paragraph above regarding Clock Speed as it
- relates to "OLD" and "NEW" Sportsters.
-
- WHAT'S CHANGED BETWEEN "OLD" AND "NEW" V34 SPORTSTERS?
-
- Plenty. First off the "NEW" V34 Sportster uses a brand new design
- circuit board. Comparing an "OLD" and "NEW" V34 Sportster circuit board
- alongside one another and the changes are both obvious and radical.
-
- For another thing, the "NEW" V34 Sportster has had the 80186 cpu chip
- removed, the cpu functions now having been incorporated into the Texas
- Instruments DSP (Digital Signal Processor) chip. This accounts for why
- the firmware chips aren't interchangeable between "OLD" and "NEW" V34
- Sportster models.
-
- Another of the more obvious changes is the DAA (phone line interface)
- transformer has been replaced with a much larger (probably better) unit.
- Don't quote me, but I believe it was the tiny DAA transformer in the
- previous design which ultimately was isolated as being the root cause of
- the old Spiral Death problem. The 04-18-95 firmware release last year
- was more of a workaround or patch to compensate for the shortcomings
- imposed by the tiny DAA transformer. I think it goes to show the level
- of engineering expertise at USR that they were able to write a software
- patch to get around a hardware problem. The patch worked well, didn't
- it?
-
- SO WHICH IS BETTER, AN OLD OR A NEW V34 SPORTSTER?
-
- In my opinion the "NEW" Sportster will ultimately turn out to be an
- overall improvement, once the new firmware microcode stabilizes. The
- "NEW" V34 Sportster design is only about 5-6 months old. Remember the
- problems users were experiencing back in late 1994 when the "OLD" V34
- Sportster was only 5-6 months old? It's alot like a car. The car you
- purchase new today will undoubtedly incorporate changes and improvements
- over last year's model, but because of those changes, owners may
- experience new, unforseen problems that need to be rectified. It's a
- repeating cycle.
-
- THE OLD SPORTSTER WORKED SO WELL, WHY THE SUDDEN CHANGE IN DESIGN?
-
- Beats the crap out of me. Why does any big corporation do anything that
- represents a change? Three little words: The bottom line.
-
- Enjoy your new modem. If it doesn't work as you think it should then
- contact the manufacturer's technical support department. If you don't
- get satisfaction then simply return the product and get something else.
- At least you can do that much with a modem and it only cost $250. Did
- you ever try returning or exchanging a $30,000 car?
